The Thatcham Vehicle Security Categories

Thatcham have defined a number of categories for vehicle security devices ranging from combined Alarms and Immobilisers through to After Theft Tracking Systems and TQA for aftermarket Vehicle Security Devices. In each category, third party security products have been evaluated against "The British Insurance Industry's Criteria for Vehicle Security", using specific tests to indicate the effectiveness of the product. The product listing is updated as and when new security systems are judged to have successfully complied with the Criteria. Each product is subject to a review after 12 months.

Category 1

ELECTRONIC ALARM AND IMMOBILISER

  Isolates a minimum of two operating circuits or systems, or a minimum of one operationally relevant vehicle control unit with coded intervention

ELECTRONIC/ELECTROMECHANICAL IMMOBILISER

• Immobiliser
  Passively set
  Isolates a minimum of two operating circuits or systems, or a minimum of one operationally relevant vehicle control unit with coded intervention

ELECTRONIC ALARM UPGRADE [GENERAL APPLICATION]

• Alarm
  Perimeter detection

  Passenger compartment movement detection
  Inclination detection (Motorcycle only)

  Resistance to attack for a minimum of one minute
  Installed on vehicles with existing Category 2 immobilisation to attain Category 1 status
